Someone is trying to trademark CryptoPunks. And it’s not Larva Labs.

This September, we founded Satire Labs with one clear mission: To make an obscene amount of money for us and you (the person buying our NFTs) through parodies. So much money, you will need to consult with “Boatload Engineers” to measure your wealth¹.
We were inspired by “Tractor” who’s made millions by making an identical copy of CryptoPunks, putting it on Solana, and calling it “SolPunks”.
But 3 days ago, we learned just how badly greed can corrupt. We discovered our hero “Tractor” is the antithesis of crypto & NFT.
In those 2 threads, the Solpunks creator displays his lack of moral character and legal understanding.
This is a man who:
- has the audacity to trademark CryptoPunks
- insinuate he will have exclusive rights to ALL “Punks” (which includes CryptoPunks) toys
- would even kill his own babies (Baby Sol Punks), if it means making more money.
Here’s the worst part. We looked through his entire trademark filing and he mentions CryptoPunks and Larva Labs a total of ZERO times.²
Wow. You really take the employees at the US trademark office as patsies?
I mean, we here at Satire Labs are degenerates too. But this is really something. We prefer not to YOLO our legal paperwork by misleading the US government.
Thankfully, contrary to his threats, you CANNOT send a cease & desist (“shutdown”) to a competitor when your trademark is still pending³.
The average trademark process takes 12 to 18 months to complete⁴. Since they filed for the trademark in August 2021, it will probably be 2023 when their pending trademark is laughed out and flatly rejected.
In this time, he’s making $$$ everyday, thanks to the 5% royalty fees, which he’s never mentioned. Not on Discord and not on their website.
This is all dumb. Very very dumb. Which is why we’re launching our own SolPunks.
Introducing Dumb SolPunks 🎉🎉🎉.
Despite their name, these “Dumb” SolPunks are not dumb. In fact, they’re actually the legitimate heir to the SolPunks name. But because the Virgin SolPunks creator has such poor understanding of the law and a tendency to lash out, they’re going to go with the “dumb” facade for now.
It took the Virgin SolPunks 4 months to sell out all 10,000 SolPunks.
We think we can achieve the same in the next 12 months, before their trademark process completes.
Of course, we don’t expect most people to YOLO their life savings into “Dumb” SolPunks (the REAL SolPunks 😎).
The Legal Route
If you’re feeling determined, you can consider directly challenging the trademark application through the Trademark Trial & Appeal Board (TTAB). Their contact information can be found here.
Personally, we don’t want to take the legal route. It just feels … lame. Totally not in the spirit of crypto. Again, our opinion.
We’d prefer to let the people decide. Besides, we all already know who the real Solpunks are. ;)
